The 49ers were miners during the California gold rush. The gold seekers were called the 49ers because they were miners who went west in 1849. Many people did not find gold, but settled in California after the gold rush. Most of the treasure seekers left for California in 1849.
Many of the miners made their journey on foot or by wagon. It could sometimes take the miners up to nine months to get to California.
